A superhero blood cell stars in a clever TV hit

Sal Monella is a poisonous gangster hell bent on infection, and a pimple is a power-mad oil gland. That's life--and a quirky twist on salmonella and acne--in the animated world of Ozzy & Drix, part of the WB network's Saturday-morning lineup. This was the first season for what might be called a "smartoon." It was in the top programs among kids ages 2 to 11. And it's coming back this fall.

Instead of battling mystical monsters, Ozzy & Drix cleverly personifies body parts--a muscle cell is a police chief--to teach kids about their bodies. Rather than lecture kids about smoking, Ozzy & Drix turns nicotine into Nick O'Teen, a smarmy villain with long claws that hook into brains and cause addictions. Bad guys like Nick are taken down by the title stars: Osmosis "Ozzy" Jones, a street-smart white blood cell, and Drix, an uptight but intelligent cold pill with a chest full of medicine. White blood cells help fight infection, and Drix is a medicine chest. Get it?

Ozzy & Drix makes a point of tackling "issues that are very real to the day-to-day lives of kids," says David Foster, a Harvard University internist who helps develop story lines for the show. "We hope they take an interest in what is going on inside them." That's why all the action occurs within 13-year-old Hector, who contracts diseases, encounters peer pressure, and even drinks spoiled milk. "This poor kid has been through a lot," says Producer Alan Burnett.

Pun fun. The slap-your-knee, ba-dum-dum humor takes many forms. Ozzy and Drix set up a detective firm behind Hector's cornea--they're "private eyes"--to ensure him a safe adolescence. Blood cells race like cars through Hector's arteries and past a "roadside" billboard reading "Peace for the Middle Ear." There's a rock concert at the Diaphragm Club featuring.

My father often writes. That is his job. This winter vacation, father was rushing through a research task. He was in need of a person urgently to type his results into the computer. He has no assistant till now, so he asked me if I could do that for him. He promised to pay me. I agreed happily, for this was the first opportunity for me to earn some money of my own. Then I became a little employee of my father, although just for a short time. I spent almost all my spare time in typing. And my father was very satisfied with what I had done.

As one of the most special groups in the society, disabled people’s livingconditions—not only their material conditions, but their mental world as well, really need more help and improvement. In ourChina, disabled people take up 5% of the whole population, and their problems will surely cause social problems.Fortunately, our government does well in helping and supporting disabled people. They offer jobs for them, give them training and teachthe whole society not to discriminate but give them more care. Chairman Deng of China Disabled People Association recentlyreceived a Nobel Prize for Peace, which is a good evidence for government’s effort. But it seems that the society does notquite agree with our government—at least the majority people don’t. They don’t discriminate them but don’t think them tohave enough ability to do things, either. They even sometimes help disabled people when they are in the mood. But the emotionin their act is not the love between equal people but the sympathy from upper people to lower people. Though they heard aboutHelen Keller and Stephen Hawking, they still thought they were superior to disabled people in all aspects. So if thegovernment can change these people’s mind, the living conditions of disabled people will be greatly improved, for some jobs, such as engineers, lawyers, etc. which need more movement in mentality rather than physiology can be given to disabled peoplewho are capable of doing that job.But unfair treatment isn’t the only problem disabled people are facing. Some disabledpeople who live in countryside or mountain districts have worse living conditions and need more help. Some workers who becamedisabled when working can’t get proper treatment or compensation, especially in the building field. It’s becoming a reallygood social problem. And also, some other problems may influence disabled people’s lives.Solving these problems needsefforts—not only the government’s, also ours. As a song sings, “If everyone of us gives a little love, the world willbecome a beautiful wonderland!”

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay commenting on the remark “the greatest use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast it.” You can give examples to illustrate your point and then explain what you will do to make your life more meaningful. You should write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words.

How to Live a Meaning Life

Among all the highlighted topics, there is “how to live a meaning life?” Everyone has his or her own opinion. As the saying has it, “the greatest use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast it.” I cannot agree any more.

If our life is just to pursue something for ourselves, we will surely feel fruitless and meaningless when we grow old. From Steve Jobs’s bibliography, we can get that the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do. Steve Jobs has brought a great many changes to our world. His life, although short, definitely outlast. That’s a life worth living.

Therefore, if there is a way to make my life meaningful, it should be to find something I’m interested in and also helpful to others or the whole society. Only in this way can I keep my passion throughout my life until I finally fulfil my life.
