On Mothering Sunday, the servants, who generally lived with their employers, were encouraged to return home and honor their mothers. It was traditional for them to bring a special cake along to celebrate the occasion.

  In the U.S., in 1907 Ana Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day. Jarvis persuaded her mother's church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the second anniversary of her mother's death, the 2nd Sunday of May. The next year Mother's Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia.

  Jarvis and others began a letter-writing campaign to ministers, businessmen, and politicians in their quest to establish a national Mother's Day. They were successful. President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, made the official announcement proclaiming Mother's Day a national observance that was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May.

  Many other countries of the world celebrate their own Mother's Day at different times throughout the year. Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May, as in the U.S.

  母亲节的意义在感恩

  母亲节,满屏都是喊妈声,有人调侃“目测朋友圈又该出现一批孝子孝女了”。与这种调侃相比,一些质疑显得大义凛然,却经不起推敲,比如有网友反对母亲节被商业化,“别让商业化污染了母爱”,“商业化味道浓厚,过度包装使母亲节变味”,甚至有人抵制母亲节,因其是舶来品。

  商业化就有那么可怕吗?不只是母亲节,当前的节日(无论传统节日还是洋节)哪一个不被商业化?在凶猛的商业时代,商家捕捉商机、消费节日再自然不过,这是他们的本能,是生存的天然基因。倘若反应迟钝,不想也不敢触碰消费者内心的柔软,如何赚钱?如何谋生?商家通过敏锐触角将商机与节日内涵连接起来,既能赚钱,又能推销节日,还能让做子女的敬敬孝心,有啥不好?

  一提起商业化就皱眉头,一看到商家消费节日就斥骂,说白了这是食古不化,骨子里依然有贬低工商、歧视商人的陈腐观念。至于因母亲节是洋节就横生抵触之意,显得有些单纯。母亲节虽是洋节,但哪个人没有母亲?它所传导的人类感情是让人感同身受的,所立足的核心价值也是相融相通的。母亲节何辜,难道因为发源于国外就该被奚落?

  如果不是商家连日来的“鼓噪”,也许很多人并不知道母亲节。其实,母亲节只是一个提醒,提醒我们念母恩、有孝心。“凯风自南,吹彼棘心。棘心夭夭,母氏劬劳”,老祖宗留下的传统价值不就包含孝顺吗?从《礼记》中的“大尊尊亲,其次弗辱,其下能养”,到孟子所说的“孝子之至,莫大乎尊亲”。从“谁言寸草心,报得三春晖”到“父母呼,应勿缓;父母命,行勿懒”。母亲节的本质内涵与传统尊亲的价值传续不是一致的吗?

  即便回归到母亲节产生的时代背景,也断无抵制之必要。据称,最初的倡导者是美国西弗吉尼亚州的女性运动组织者安·里维斯·贾维斯,她筹组了“母亲日工作俱乐部”,以改善卫生条件、降低婴儿死亡率、对抗疾病并防止母奶污染。这些团体也在1861年到1865年的美国南北战争期间,照顾受伤将士。今天,无论卫生条件的改善,还是婴儿死亡率的降低都成效显著,那么对于母亲是否就不该关注其权益了呢?当然不是!

  关注母亲节有两层内涵,一是关注自身的母亲,二是关注全天下的为人母者。在这个节日,我们也许会想到割肝救子的母亲,还能想到为护子被恶犬撕咬5分钟的年轻妈妈……

  别找借口抵制母亲节,有时间抵制不如多孝顺父母;也别一个劲儿刷朋友圈了,毕竟不是所有的母亲都会使用微博微信。有句话说得好:贫穷的父母,钱到为孝;病弱的父母,出力为孝;孤单的父母,相伴为孝;脾气暴躁的父母,理解为孝;勤俭持家的父母,勤快为孝;病患的父母,多份照顾为孝;唠叨的父母,聆听为孝。
